The Risk of Too Much Sitting

This week on Fitness Rocks I review two articles that look at the adverse health consequences of prolonged sedentary activity – which is the way most people live.  Are there health benefits from simply getting up from your desk and moving around for a few minutes several times a day?

Here is a suggestion for people who sit all day. Use the restroom and breakroom on a different floor to the one you sit on. Or use a restroom that is further away than the closest one. This gets you a better quality break a few times a day and over time, will become automatic, so you don’t have to think about.

That’s a really good suggestion Helen!
Dr. Monte, you questioned why so many people are sedentary if this study is a “no-brainer” according to one listener. I think it’s because your podcast is preaching to the choir. It seems to me, at least from the now defunct Social Forum, that most of your fans are very active so I think your new format is a good idea as long as your devoted listeners spread the word at work and among friends like you said. The only down-side is that for us “active” listeners the information you’re currently presenting is second nature, contrary to before the shift when your podcasts were more in-depth studies on sometimes complicating topics. I’m not sure how to get around this but I just thought I’d share my opinion. I still love the podcast and will continue to listen no matter what. I’m really looking forward to the video-cast that you’re working on. Do you have an estimated release date? Thanks for all your hard work! To health!

I think this is a great idea!! Please send a memo to my boss to explain why I have to go downstairs and use the restroom or why I need to spend 5 minutes to walk over to someone’s desk instead of sending an email so that I can continue on with my daily workload. I exercise regularly and eat well. My husband and I both are trying to be good role models for our kids. Unfortunately, until we get businesses to allow employees greater flexability in their jobs this argument may fall on deaf ears.
